When I left my position as Lecturer in Music at the Faculty of Creative Arts, University of Papua New Guinea, to take charge of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Band in 1994, the late Inspector Pala Walo MBE sang the melody of Rici Rici to me in my office on my very first day. He asked me to arrange it for the band.

That moment began my enduring love of Papua New Guinean folk music. During my five-year tenure in PNG, I arranged many traditional and national melodies for band, including:

The Kokoda Trail is a famous 96-kilometre route through the rugged Owen Stanley Range. During the Second World War, it was the setting for the historic 1942 campaign between Australian and Japanese forces. Crossing isolated mountains, dense tropical forest and the traditional lands of the Mountain Koiari people, the trail remains a powerful symbol of courage, endurance and sacrifice.

Kokoda Trail March combines the colour and vitality of Papua New Guinean folk music with the strength and excitement of the traditional concert march.
