Equinox for Brass Quintet & Drumset
Equinox
John Coltrane – Arranged for Brass Quintet with Optional Drum Kit
Arranged by Keith Terrett
John Coltrane's Equinox is one of the most atmospheric and emotionally compelling jazz compositions ever written. This superb arrangement for Brass Quintet with optional Drum Kit captures the dark, blues-infused character of the original while allowing brass players to explore its rich harmonic language and expressive improvisational style.
Originally released on Coltrane's Sound, Equinox is a minor blues, first recorded in C♯ minor with a slow swing feel, although it is now more commonly performed in C minor. The title was chosen by Coltrane's wife, Naima, and is especially fitting—John Coltrane was born on 23 September 1926, the date of the autumn equinox that year.
Although Coltrane's Sound was not released until 1964, Coltrane had already performed Equinox in concert on several occasions, including appearances with Miles Davis' rhythm section and at the 1960 Monterey Jazz Festival. Sadly, alternate Atlantic recordings of the work were destroyed in the devastating 1978 Atlantic Records warehouse fire.
Unlike Naima or My Favorite Things, Equinox never became a regular feature of Coltrane's later performances. Musicologist Dr Lewis Porter observed that the work reflects Coltrane's desire to return to a more primal, deeply expressive form of the blues, moving away from the harmonically intricate bebop tradition.
The original recording opens with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones presenting a brief Latin-inspired introduction before settling into the haunting slow swing of the main theme. Coltrane's tenor saxophone enters with remarkable restraint, creating an atmosphere of mystery and reflection before unfolding into an improvisation of extraordinary emotional intensity. Jones' dramatic cymbal crashes and rolling toms, together with Tyner's understated accompaniment, contribute to one of the most memorable performances in modern jazz.
This arrangement faithfully preserves the haunting mood of the original while making it highly effective for brass ensemble performance. The optional drum kit part recreates the distinctive rhythmic drive and dramatic colours of Elvin Jones, making it equally suitable for concert performance, recitals, festivals and educational settings.
