The Gypsy Viennese Brass Ensemble in New Orleans

From the fiery brilliance of Viennese Gypsy music to the smoky jazz clubs of New Orleans, this original work takes the brass octet on an exhilarating musical journey.

Inspired by the dazzling virtuosity of Rafael Méndez and the intimate, blues-inflected playing of Miles Davis and Chet Baker, it combines rapid articulation, passionate melodies and thrilling ensemble writing with moments of restrained melancholy.

The principal melody passes around the octet, giving different instruments and sections opportunities to shine, while the contrasting central section features expressive trombone and horn solos. Technically demanding, colourful and highly entertaining, this is an exciting addition to any accomplished brass octet’s concert or competition programme.
